Surfboarding?
i live in a place where nobody surfboards and there are no beaches only at the lakes but they arnt really meant for surfing because there are no waves and if you were to try there people would think your nuts. lol.
i love the water and the beach and i really want to try it. i’m 14 so is it the right age to start?
i just started snowboarding this year. i’m ok at it. i was wondering if you surfboard?
1. is it hard?
2 is it easy or hard to learn
3. is it fun
4. is there any camps for teens or girls?
5. where can you go surfing?
6. if i snowboard will surfing be easier.
7 please tell me more about it!

1. It isn’t hard under the right conditions. For your first time out, I would suggest a lesson. Ride what’s called a soft top or foam board such as the ones in the first link below. You’ll want to ride a long board at first. Something between 7′6″ and 9′ long. Anything longer than that and I think it would be too big for someone your size.
2. Surfing has a very big learning curve. At first it can be hard. You have to be in pretty good shape. You have to be able to, first of all, paddle out to where the waves are. There’s no chair lift to get you out there. Then, you have to turn around, and paddle to catch the wave. Once you’ve caught it, you’ll eventually want to stand up right away, as fast as you can. But this is hard at first, so you can try getting up on your knees, then one knee, then stand. Once you get comfortable standing up, you’ll want to go “down the line” which is where you stay on the face of the wave, and ride it kinda at an angle into shore (instead of just going straight into the beach in the white wash).
3. It’s TOTALLY fun! The most fun thing I’ve ever done. The feeling you get when you’re standing on a surfboard riding a wave is indescribable. I would also compare it to flying. If you’re ever surfing in super clear water, like in Hawaii, it’s amazing to be gliding over the water and being able to look down and you can actually see the reef and the fish below you. It’s beautiful.
4. There are plenty of camps for teens and girls to learn. I live in San Diego now, and the second link below is for a girls surf camp in San Diego. It can be intimidating out there in the water. For so long, surfing has been a male dominated sport. There are still more guys out there than there are girls, but there are more and more girls paddleing out each year.
5. You can find surfing almost anywhere that has coastline. Surfline is a great website that lists hundreds of popular surfing spots around the world. They give you daily reports of wave and weather conditions, and some spots even have live cameras you can check out the surf with. I’ve put their main page as the third link below.
The website can be kinda tricky to navigate at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s not too bad. I’ll walk you through how to find the cams and reports. Open up the third link in a new window. You see the bar near the top that says Home, Cams & Reports, Forecasts, etc…? Scroll over “Cams & Reports” but don’t click on it. Then scroll down over Southern California, then scroll across to Orange County, then finally scroll across to HB Pier, Northside and click on that. (That’s where I used to live). Give it a minute and the camera will load. Also, you can see below the forecast and report for that surf spot.
Have fun on Surfline and learn about all kinds of waves all over the us and the world.
6. Many people say no, snowboarding will not make surfing easier. I disagree with those people. If you can snowboard, it means you’re in shape, you’re active, and you have good balance. All of those things will help make surfing easier.
7. I started surfing about 8 years ago. It took me a long time to get comfortable in the water. I started out borrowing and renting long boards. Then I bought my first board. It was 7′6″ and totally cute. I lived in Huntington Beach, California but would also surf in Newport Beach, CA. It takes a lot of work to “be good.” If you just want to have fun out there, and get that incredible feeling of flying, you can do it in a day. If you want to really get into it and start someday shortboarding and having great style on a longboard, it takes a lot of work. I used to get twice a day. I would wake up before the sunrise, get to the beach just as the sun was coming up, then surf until I had to go to work. After work, I’d head straight to the beach again for a sunset session. Then my husband and I moved to Hawaii for 3 years where we both had fun short boarding all over the islands. We’re back in California now, San Diego this time. I love it here. And I love the surfing.
If you can’t go surfing, I have found that wakeboarding is somewhat similar. That’s what I would do in college when I wasn’t near a beach. We would wakeboard. You do have to know someone with a boat and all the gear, but it’s really super fun too.

p.s. The last link is a surfer surfing in the Great Lakes. So, you don’t necessarily have to have ocean to surf.

6.it would be easier b cuz u know how 2 balance ur self
7.always put wax on a board b 4 u go on it so u wont slip and
fall …u feel so free when u surf board…im
not a pro at it but at least i know how to get on..lol…i usually
surfboard when im in cali…remember its better to surfboard

p.s: yes if you did surfboard at a lake ppl would think ur crazy lol..i am also addictide to the beach and i enjoy surfing…im 13 and i surfed just a little bit last summer so 14 would be a good age to start…
